Your Insurance Coverage

Your auto insurance policy explains what is covered if you’re in an accident, so it’s important to understand it ahead of time. In most cases, insurance pays for repairs up to what your vehicle is worth, minus your deductible. Some policies allow non-OEM (aftermarket or recycled) parts unless you’ve selected coverage that requires original manufacturer parts. Coverage and rules can vary by state, so knowing your options before an accident helps you avoid surprises.

Key things to know:

  • Insurance usually pays up to your vehicle’s value, not what you owe on it
  • Gap insurance may help if you owe more than the car is worth
  • Non-OEM parts may be used unless your policy states otherwise
  • OEM parts are designed for proper fit, performance, and safety
  • State laws may require notification or approval before non-OEM parts are used

When and How to File a Car Insurance Claim

If you’re unsure whether filing an auto insurance claim is the right move, we’re here to help. Use our claims calculator to see how repairs, deductibles, and coverage come into play.

  • Should I File an Auto Insurance Claim?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but a few simple factors can help you decide. For minor damage, especially when no other driver is involved, paying out of pocket may make sense if repairs cost less than your deductible and a potential rate increase. For major damage, injuries, or accidents involving another driver, filing a claim is usually the right choice.

    Generally, file a claim if:

    • Anyone is injured
    • Fault is unclear
    • Your vehicle has major damage or may be a total loss

You may not need to file a claim if:

    • Damage is minor and costs less than your deductible
    • A rate increase would cost more over time than the repair

If you’re unsure, start by getting a repair estimate from a trusted local shop and compare it to your deductible and possible premium increase. Understanding your options ahead of time can help you make the best decision for your situation.

  • How to File a Car Insurance Claim

After an accident, contact your insurance company as soon as possible—by phone or through their mobile app—to report what happened and upload photos of the damage.

Be prepared to share basic details about the accident and submit any requested documents, such as a police report if one is available. Ask your insurer whether your policy includes rental car coverage or alternative transportation while your vehicle is being repaired.

    Helpful tips:

    • Take photos and videos of the scene and vehicle damage
    • Call the police to document the accident when appropriate
    • Avoid admitting fault at the scene
    • File your claim promptly to prevent delays
  • Is It Worth It to File an Insurance Claim?

It's not worth it if the cost to repair the damage is below your deductible, since you pay that out of pocket anyway. If you've got major damage that is going to be very expensive to fix (or the car is totaled), then it's usually worth filing a claim.

  • What If the Claim Amount Isn’t Enough?

Your insurance payout should cover the cost to repair your vehicle—or, in some cases, reflect its actual cash value. If the amount offered seems too low, you have the right to ask how it was calculated and to request a review.

Providing supporting information can help. This may include a repair estimate, details about your vehicle’s trim level or special features, and documentation for any aftermarket upgrades. Photos or service records from before the damage can also help ensure your vehicle is valued accurately.
