Been in an Accident?

Accident Do's and Don'ts

Have you ever been in an auto accident? Most drivers have—or will be at some point. In fact, statistics show the average person is involved in a collision every seven to ten years.

When an accident happens, the damage to your vehicle is only part of the challenge. Navigating repairs, insurance claims, rental vehicles, and next steps can quickly feel overwhelming. At Dacus Auto Body & Collision Repair, we understand how stressful this process can be.

The information on this site is here to help make a difficult situation a little easier to manage. Our goal is to educate you, protect your rights, and guide you through the repair process with confidence.

If you’re involved in an accident, here are a few important steps to consider. Keep in mind that some of these actions may be required by state law:

Shattered rear car window, glass fragments inside the vehicle. Green car, dark interior.

Do

  • Check for injuries first. Make sure you and anyone in your vehicle are safe, then check on others involved in the accident.

  • Call 911 if needed. If anyone is injured or the situation requires it, contact emergency services immediately and provide first aid if appropriate.

  • Move to a safe location. If possible and safe to do so, move your vehicle out of traffic.

  • Exchange information. Collect names, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, license plate numbers, and insurance details from all involved parties.

  • Gather witness information. Obtain names and contact information from any witnesses at the scene.

  • Document the scene. Use your phone or camera to take photos of vehicle damage, the accident scene, and any property involved.

  • Record key details. Note the time, location, weather, traffic conditions, and a brief description of what happened.

  • Be accurate with authorities. Provide a factual account of the accident exactly as it occurred.

  • Contact your insurance company. They may guide you through next steps and request documentation such as a police report.

Don't

  • Do not leave the scene of an accident until you have exchanged required information with all involved parties and authorities, as applicable.

  • Avoid discussing fault. Do not admit responsibility or speculate about what caused the accident at the scene.

  • Do not share personal medical details. Avoid discussing your physical condition or mental state with anyone other than medical professionals or law enforcement.

  • Limit conversations with insurance representatives at the scene. Provide basic facts only; detailed statements can be given later when you’ve had time to gather information.

  • Do not alter or discard anything related to the accident until photos are taken and information is documented.

  • Do not sign any documents at the scene unless required by law enforcement.
